SONIC YOUTH / MUDHONEY SPLIT (1988)

Hello boys and ghouls. Well its Halloween and I love Halloween. I tried to think of a Halloween themed post that would fit this blog, and this is all I could come up with. Good enough eh? Mudhoney and Sonic Youth covering each other. Enjoy Creeps! Happy Halloween!

HANDS UP WHO WANTS TO DIE - VEGA IN THE LYRE (2014)

Do you like BIG sounding bands? Of course you do. Big band, Big Sound! Holllllyyyyy schnickies...these guys kill it! Noise mongrels from Ireland, HUWWTD for short, just released their newest effort and its a doozy of a black eye on your already ugly mugs. I mentioned these guys before here in anticipation of this album, and it does not disappoint.
Heavy, crunching and pummeling and...Big. Big ass bass. Huge drums. And enormous guitars. I'd stack these guys right up with new bands wrecking the place like Whores, Tile, Throat, Hawks and label-mates Blacklisters. I think you'll agree this one helluva monster crusher bruiser. Get it fools! Did I mention BIG?

ГРУНТ - ГРУНТ (2014)

From Moscow Russia, comes  ГРУНТ. I have no idea how to pronounce it, but the bandcamp page says Grrrunt. So let's go with that shall we?
A 3 piece who make a thick racket of chunky, crunchy instrumental goodness. For the most part, songs get ripping at breakneck speed with a noisy punk rock fury, but they are not afraid to mix in some angular and off-kilter riffs. Goes well with a pot of coffee too. Good show gentlemen!

HELIOS CREED - THE WARMING (1991)

I just posted Helios Creeds' first album on Amrep a few days ago.
So here's their second, 2-song single, first on Amrep. Essential space noise rock.

PORD - VALPARAISO (2011)

Some good start / stop rocking good shit from Pord, native to Marvejols, France. They definitely get you groovin' and shakin' your asses with Drive Like Jehu riffs and rhythms. Some complex guitar-ery ala Keelhaul, Don Caballero or Jesus Lizard to keep your head spinning. And the vocals are gruff but even in the mix as texture...Not too loud. Not too soft. Juuuuust right...Like mom's apple pie. Mmmmmm.

THE CLOTH - NUMBER ONE (2013)

So keeping in line with the Reptilian Keystone Noise Rock series, here is a band that will be on #3. Like Faking, they are also out of Philly and having some pretty kickass sounding similarities to Unsane and Hammerhead. This is their older EP, but will keep your belly full until their new one punches us in the face. I'll keep an eye out and have it here.

HELIOS CREED - THE LAST LAUGH (1989)

Wow, no Helios Creed on this blog yet. Well time to change that pronto.
This is their 2nd full length, and first on Amrep, from way back in '89.
There were a bunch of Space Shuttle launches that year. I heard the astronauts loved Helios Creed.

SPECIAL PEOPLE - DAVID CARRADINE STYLE +2 (2014)

(Band submission)
So this was sent my way from Special People, some fine folks from Baltimore, MD.
2 full lengths, each available on cassette, and also a 7" should get your motor running. This 4 piece takes a mad stroll down the street with a bazooka leveling everyone and everything in their path. So watch out. Especially you in the Target purchased Beastie Boys shirt.
For the most part they're fuzzed out and crunched out, dirty and grimey noise punk, Drunks With Guns, Pissed Jeans and White Drugs kinda schtuff, but underlying sounds similar to Unwound or Treepeople are apparent too. I could see these guys being on Sub Pop some day. Wouldn't you agree?

ULTRACOÏT - SEX CHURCH (2014)

Jeez, I call this a noise rock blog, and haven't posted this yet? Actually, I thought I did, but apparently not. So I apologize for my slack-ass and ball dropping behavior. I remember hearing this and thinking, goddamn this is gotta go on the site, but somewhere along the way I forgot. Must've been all those shark diving excursions I've been on recently.
Anywho, if you're a fan of Helmet, Unsane, Whores, Hawks...you know, the go-tos....yup its that good... Bust out your leather shorts, studded belts, and dominatrix masks, let's get weird!

POLES - PAMPLEMOUSTIQUE EP (2014)

Some pretty bombastic instrumental noise/math rock from this 3 piece from Paris / Lyon France. The songs go from intricate guitar tomfoolery, to balls out, frenetic and chaotic rip-roaring blasts.
There are 4 songs on the EP, but they only have 3 tracks up for now. Not sure why.
Recommended if you like Lightning Bolt, Don Caballero, Lynx, June of 44, mixing DayQuil, cough syrup and expresso and whiskey shots. Eeeeeeeeeeee!

ITHAQUA - DEATH DRAIN (2014)

Ithaqua is from Melbourne Austrailia. They're a huge, heavy, sludgy, doomy kinda thing, with some experimental soundscapes and spacey hallucinatory aural texture creeping in through the cracks of your brain matter. This is their new 4 song soul crusher, an EP by normal standards, but with songs reaching the 6 and 8 minute mark, this haymaker will give you the maximum amount of pummeling necessary to make your head explode. Ba-Boom!!

MILLIONS - GATHER SCATTER (2009)

So continuing on with related posts and following up the last one....Whoa, 3 related posts. I'm putting waaay too much thinking into this shit.
So Millions features a member from Gasoline Fight as well as head honcho of the metal label Seventh Rule Recordings. The band consist of 4 friendly burnouts from Chicago and Portland whose sounds slam those white chompers into the back of your head with its jagged fury. They're not metal, but aggressive, angular, mathy, balls out hardcore tinged noise punk... a healthy mix of Sweet Cobra, Unwound, Ken Mode, Drive Like Jehu, and Botch. Saddle up and ride!

GASOLINE FIGHT - USELESS PIECES OF WEAPONRY (2004)

So relating to the last post... this short, one release EP from Chicago's Gasoline Fight, features one of the members now in Volunteer. It also features members of Sweep the Leg Johnny, Small Brown Bike and Millions, and is more on the punk side of the spectrum. But a close listen reveals killer complex mathy parts, and noisy, angular and crunchy guitar tinges not unlike a cocktail mix of Drive Like Jehu and Helmet. Go on...try it out.

VOLUNTEER - GONER EP (2014)

Mentioned these guys here before. Some friends of mine from the foamy Beer City in Wisconsin.

So this slab elbows and knees you in the gut to take you down, then crushes your limp ass like a hydraulic press. And then each of the 4 songs acts as torpedo strikes to destroy and finish off the rest of you. The bits and pieces that remain of your sad self, will know you went out getting the best ass-kicking you've ever had!

Consisting of 3 original, lurching chunks of heaviness, and a scuzzed-out, killer and barely recognizable Jawbreaker cover, this EP can be picked up as a 10" at the below at the link. The album art was designed and screen printed by band member, taco eater and head honcho of The Bureau of Print Research and Design. Batten down the hatches!!

NO WAY - SING PRAISES (2014)

(Band submission)
These 4 hoodlums from New York called No Way, love pizza (I can only assume) and play heavy-ass, noiseee, and sludgy as fuck dirt grinder rock. This is their debut 4-nugget slimeball of an EP that bludgeons and batters up and down your wimpy ass. Something like Pissed Jeans meets Whores meets Fight Amp meets blown ear drums. Yeah!

HAMMERHEAD - GLOBAL DEPRESSION (2014)

These guys really need no fancy introduction or lengthy description. They've been blowing out our eardrums out for years and continue to do so on their new EP. From Amrep to Learning Curve, so they haven't strayed far for distribution. Always a favorite and a Big Ass Grin on my face.

JOE 4 - NJEGOV SIN (2012)

So, you can tell right off the bat from the first listen, that these guys are fans of Shellac, Tar, 90s Amrep/Touch and Go type stuff. They even got Steve Albini and Bob Weston for the recording process, doing it analog and to tape. Yay analog!! Kinda funny they mention that Albini played scrabble on Facebook the whole time and probably doesn't remember what the record sounds like. He's that good I guess.
So this is the first full length from Zagreb, Croatia's Joe 4. They have a previous EP called Enola Gay which is pretty badass, and a couple of newer songs on a compilation that are all at the Bandcamp link below. So click around and explore. You'll be glad you did.

PLOWS - THOSE PEOPLE (2007)

(By request)
Weird. I had be meaning to post this and was just thinking about it, when whadda ya know, it gets requested. Happy to do so.
Formed in Louisville, KY, Plows fuse the sonic discord of Nation of Ulysses with the rhythmic dirge of Shellac. Guitarist/vocalist David Brooks and drummer/vocalist Aaron Osbourne have made the familiar Dischord Records sound their own, applying a heavy blanket of detuned guitar and creating a crashing and percussive sound that is simultaneously thick and jangly. Plows released a split 7" with Young Widows, a split 7" with Prideswallower (which I just discovered and need to find), this full-length debut, and another full length made up of demos called I Hate My Car and I Want To Drive. Enjoy!

GRIZZLOR - WHEN YOU DIE (2014)

(Band submission)
So I posted these guys before here. This is their new EP of epic proportions.  4 ditty's of heavy, sludgy noise that definitely sits these guys comfortably at a dinner party with newer noise like Hawks, Blacklisters, and Whores. The artwork kicks ass too. So do yourself a favor and snag this up faster than a gigantic hungry alien slug monster sucking down human flesh and meat for a midnight scarfing after binge drinking all night.

BULL - GORDON ZONE (1993)

So this here band Bull, from Chicago, has a single before this (which I should probably post as well) and featured members of Big Black, Shiny Beast and The Hedonists.
This doesn't have all the same players and moving parts as that single, but its pretty close, and is still a fucking badass mini record.
If you like Glazed Baby, Distorted Pony, Big Black, Jesus Lizard, 90s noise rock, etc. and have good taste in shoes and booze, then you will dig this.
Go ahead. Click away now down below. Your welcome.

BURLAP - DEMO (2014)

Here's a quicky. 4 song good goddamn sounding demo from Burlap out of Sydney, Austrailia.
The first 3 songs are shorter, dirgy and scuzzy trudges, reminding me of 2 other bands from Melbourne, Austrailia...Sewers and Gentlemen. Heave some Pissed Jeans on the fire and you're cookin'. The last song is a longer jam, starting off with an experimental and psychotic drone before finally building to a rockin' hip-shaker at the end. Yeah! Do it!

BIG UPS - EIGHTEEN HOURS OF STATIC (2014)

The Big Ups from New York, NY play an indie/noise brand of rock that shows up drunk at the party and can be seen mingling with the likes of Slint, Big'n, Metz, Bitch Magnet, Rodan...get what I'm saying?
Overall the songs tear through angular and crunchy noise rock assaults, but the Big guys aren't afraid to slow it down at times to mix in some indie / mathy compositional components. There is definitely more than background static happening throughout these 11 tracks. Get ready to have your party crashed and then turn out better.

3 piece from Minneapolis delivers a 4 song EP of the noise rock nature. I posted an earlier release here, so they are no strangers to these parts. Big guitars, loud drums and aggro vocals. We like them and you should too.
You like cassettes? They have 'em. Scoop 'em up at the link below.
